OLS-15

Buying, Selling, Trading WWG OLP-18C

  • Optimized for field measurements on single-mode systems
  • TWINtest: Simultaneous measurement of attenuation at 1310 and 1550 nm
  • Auto-l mode for automatic wavelength detection on the power meter
  • Fiber identification using modulated signals
  • Universal interchangeable adapter system
  • Rugged, shockproof and splashproof housing
  • AC, dry- or rechargeable battery operation

Optimized for field measurements on single-mode systems
During installation testing and maintenance work on all sorts of single-mode fiber optical systems (e.g. long-distance telecom systems, passive optical networks for FITL applications), a highly stable output power level is required along with a wide dynamic range (attenuation measurements). To obtain the desired degree of measurement accuracy, a light source is needed on the transmit end which can launch sufficient optical power into the fiber. With their -7 dBm output power level, the OLS-15 Optical Laser Source is ideal for these applications. In conjunction with the OLP-15 Optical Power Meter, they provide features which greatly simplify installation, maintenance and troubleshooting/ repair of these systems. OLS-15 is a dual-wavelength source for 1310 and 1550 nm with a common output for both wavelengths.

TWINtest: Simultaneous measurement of attenuation at 1310 and 1550 nm
With its common output for both wavelengths, the OLS-15 dualwavelength source can transmit signals at 1310 and 1550 nm in alternation (TWINtest mode). The OLP-15 meter can then detect and evaluate these signals at the correct wavelength. This makes it very easy to characterize a device under test (DUT) at both wavelengths in a single step.

Auto-? mode for automatic wavelength detection on the power meter
All of the OLS sources include the Auto-l mode; an identifier is transmitted to indicate the current wavelength. On the receiving end, the OLP-15 reads the wavelength identifier and automatically switches to the proper wavelength. Erroneous measurements can be avoided using this mode; fiber identification is another possibility.

Fiber identification using modulated signals
If the sources are used with a meter such as the OLP-10 (in place of the OLP-15) or another industry-standard fiber identifier, the output signal can be modulated at 270 Hz, 1 kHz or 2 kHz. The modulation frequency is then detected and displayed on the receiving end.

Universal interchangeable adapter system
The universal adapter system handles the common fiber optical connector systems, such as FC, SC and DIN. The internal connector is also easily accessible for inspection and cleaning. A dustcap is included to protect the optical connector.

Rugged, shockproof and splashproof housing
The laser sources have a form-fitted, shockproof and splashproof housing which provides the mechanical ruggedness needed to handle tough conditions in the field. The membrane keypad is waterproof. A fold-out stand is provided on the back of the sources.

Battery or a.c. power
The laser sources can be powered with dry batteries or NiCd cells. They can be operated for typ. 28 h on dry batteries or typ. 9 h on NiCd cells (i.e. more than one workday). When a separate AC adapter is used, the instrument can be AC powered and NiCd batteries fitted in the instrument can also be recharged.

OLA-15B

  • Wide range of applications in systems installation and maintenance, as well as production
  • Large, continuously variable attenuation range
  • Attenuation settings highly accurate and reproducible
  • High return loss
  • Universal interchangeable adapter system
  • Rugged shock and water-resistant casing
  • AC, dry- or rechargeable battery operation

Wide range of applications in systems installation and maintenance, as well as production
The OLA-15 Optical Attenuator is a handy-sized, rugged instrument for variably attenuating optical signals in single-mode applications at 1310 and 1550 nm. Example applications include the simulation of line loss for BER tests on fiber optics systems, the determination of system margin / receiver sensitivity or the calibration of optical power meters. A complete test set comprising signal source, attenuator and power meter contained in a shock-resistant case is also available.

Large, continuously variable attenuation range
The large rotary control on the front panel is used to set attenuation quickly and simply within a wide range between 3 and 60 dB. The optical path is not interrupted when the attenuation is altered. As the OLA-15 is bidirectional, the instrument is very easy to use.

Attenuation settings highly accurate and reproducible
Reliable measurements demand accuracy and reproducibility of the attenuation setting. Each instrument is individually calibrated, guaranteeing that every OLA-15 meets this requirement. Careful design of the optical components ensures interference-free attenuation settings over the entire temperature range. The attenuation setting is indicated on a large liquid-crystal display.

High return loss
The OLA-15 is also suitable for measurements on systems sensitive to back-reflection, e.g. those operating at high bit rates. The return loss (reflection attenuation) of more than 40 dB means that the OLA-15 can be looped into the signal path without problems and without affecting the transmission characteristics.

Universal interchangeable adapter system
The universal system of interchangeable adapters allows matching to all commonly-used fiber optics connector systems, such as FC, SC and DIN. It also ensures easy access to the instrument’s internal connectors for the purposes of cleaning and inspection. Special dust caps protect the optical connectors from dirt and damage.

Rugged shock and water-resistant casing
The instrument is protected against shocks and wear and tear by a well-designed, non-slip, robust casing, giving the OLA-15 the mechanical ruggedness required for field use under often difficult ambient conditions. The foil keypad gives protection against dripping water. A fold-out instrument stand is located on the back panel.

AC line or long-life battery operation
The Optical Attenuator is designed for use with dry batteries or with NiCd cells. Typical operating time from dry batteries is 45 hours; a set of NiCd cells will run for typically 15 hours, more than a day of uninterrupted operation. When a separate AC adapter is used, the instrument can be AC powered and NiCd batteries fitted in the instrument can also be recharged.

OLP-18C High Performance Optical Power Meter

The OLP-18C is a compact, high performance optical power meter for installation, maintenance and repair in fiber optic networks. They can be used on their own for simple system power measurements, or with a light source for insertion lossmeasurements.

The full functionality of the high performance OLP range is realized when used with an Acterna Optical Light Source (OLS).

Together with a variable optical attenuator the OLPs are the right instruments for the commissioning of optical transmission systems, for example: DWDM systems.

Highlights

  • Easy report generation with FiberASSISTANT software
  • Data storage and RS-232 interface
  • Rugged, impact resistant, splash-proof
  • Three year recalibration period
  • High precision, easily exchangeable adapter including UPP

High performance measurement
High performance OLPs feature a wide dynamic range making them suitable for use in many different applications. The OLP-18C is designed for those with high power levels such as CATV systems, optical amplifiers and DWDM systems.

Precision calibration to traceable national standards ensures high accuracymeasurement in user selectable units. Two unique Universal Push Pull (UPP) adapters provide reliable, reproducible connection to all common 1.25 and 2.5 mm connectors, ensuring the user always has the correct connection in the field.

Absolute power level can be stored with a single keystroke, making it easy to take relative loss test measurements.

AutoWavelength Detection and TwinTest
Used with an Acterna Optical Light Source (OLS), high performance OLPs feature two powerful functions, designed to avoid the possibility of measurement errors.

The AutoWavelength Detection function detects the actualwavelength being used and switches automatically to the appropriate wavelength range. TwinTest performs two wavelength loss measurements automatically.

Automatic identification of individual fibers
High performance OLPs can be used to detect the modulation frequency of the fiber to be measured, for identification purposes. To speed this process, an audible signal identifying the fiber as one of four standard frequencies sounds as soon as the fiber is brought near the input.

Data storage
High performance OLPs can store up to 1000 sets of testmeasurements. Data can be downloaded to a printer for hard copy records, or to a PC for long-term storage and further analysis using Acterna’s FiberASSISTANT PC software.

Rugged field instrumentation
OLP-18C features low power consumption for long battery life. It can be operated with AC, dry or rechargeable AA batteries which can be changed in the field very easily. The unit is supplied in a robust housing, with splashproof foil keypad and protectors for the optical connectors, to ensure reliable operation even in harsh field conditions.
